Wing Tip Fairing
|
![]() |
| If you look at the bottom left side of the picture you will notice that the factory leading edge tubes come together and are very different sizes. I wanted a smoother surface, so I decided to fair this out by fabricating a wing tip fairing. Lt. Dan is starting out by tracing the wing tip to make a tool. |
|
The pattern is traced to a piece of pressed wood and cut
on a band saw. |
|
Then the piece is sanded to shape.
Sized from the front tube diameter tapering to the wing tip
diameter. |
|
| Finished forming jig. | |
I then cut a blank piece of 6061-0
aluminum, held it on the forming jig, then stretched the top and shrank
the sides
with a rubber mallet. |
|
| Shaping completed. | |
Trial fitting the part. |
|
| Finished piece ready to install. | |
New fairing riveted into place. Cool! |
|
The end result!. Notice the smooth taper
in the fabric from the leading edge to the wing tip. Also notice hand holds in the wing tip to help in folding the wings. |
